August 21: Move to China!

After months of preparing and packing (or months of preparing and days of packing), I’ve arrived at the airport and it’s time to board my first flight.

This morning, I woke up super early to get to the airport. I checked in my bag, thankfully it weighed 49 pounds so I didn’t have to pay the overweight fee. In case you’re wondering how I felt about trying to get my bag under the 50 pound limit: my favorite purple suitcase is now dead to me. I kept taking things out and somehow it wasn’t getting any lighter, so putting it on the scale at the airport was the moment of truth. I also have a large backpack that I’m carrying on along with my purse. I made it through the long security line and got my visa checked at the gate. So far, everything is going as perfectly as it can. Hopefully my luck (which is literally never this good) will continue.

It’s a lot of time in the air to get to Shanghai, but not quite as much as some of the other people who will be starting orientation with me tomorrow. Once I’m there, I’ll be picked up at the airport and brought to a hotel. I start orientation the very next day (the 23rd since I’ll be losing 13 hours after the time change). Everything is going to be moving incredibly fast for the next few weeks, so I might not have time to post anything, but know that a big update will come soon!

If you want to know what I mean by a busy next few weeks, here are some of the things that I will need to do:

  • Start orientation at my company
  • Find an apartment
  • Furnish said apartment (at least with the necessities like bed sheets and towels, all of the furniture will already be there)
  • Get a brand new phone number (so if you have my number, it’s not going to work anymore)
  • Get a medical check
  • Set up a bank account
  • Learn how to become a teacher and start teaching.
  • And finally, at the end of those two weeks, I will be in the classroom everyday!

If you want to contact me, I should be able to get any type of social media while I’m in China with my VPN, so feel free to shoot me a message. With the 13 hour time difference from Minnesota and the craziness of the first few weeks, it might take a little while for me to respond!

I could not be more excited to begin this year, and I will update you all as much as I possibly can!

See you later, USA!
