The 3-day rule is not what you might think.
You don’t have to wait 3-days after a date to call (just call).
My 3-day traveling rule is this: When you’re backpacking (or traveling to multiple places on 1 trip), you should only spend 3 days in each city.
3 days is the perfect amount of time to see a city. You can maximize your time in the city and be able to hit more cities on your next backpacking trip.
Here’s how I plan to see and do everything in 3 days!
See all of the main things you want to see. So before getting somewhere, or on the way there, write a list of the main things you want to experience in the city. This is what you should strive for on day 1. If you don’t finish, don’t worry, there’s still time. Do not go out drinking on the first night! (This is crucial to making the 3-day rule work.)
Make sure to wake up early (since you’re not hungover). Then, see the things you didn’t see on day 1. Anything you wrote on your list that you missed, now is the time to do it! Day 2 is when you should be going out at night! Check out the good bars, the nightlife, a club, anything!
If you’re staying 1 more night, you have tons of time! If you’re leaving, make sure you know what time to head to a train station/airport/bus station/etc. Make packing easy! Get a good bag or some packing cubes to help you!
On day 3, I tend to do things that I’ve been recommended. Every time I stay in a hostel, I get so many recommendations of what to do. On day 3, I try to do as many of those as possible.
So that’s it! That’s how I see a whole city in 3 days!
Note: If there’s something you want to do that’s outside the city, consider adding a 4th day. For example, if you go to Beijing and you also want to see Tianjin (about an hour’s train ride outside of the city), I would add a 4th day.
